# PayPal Vault v3 Integration - Complete Setup Guide
## Overview
This guide covers the complete setup for PayPal Vault v3 API integration, which allows you to save payment methods and charge them off-session (without user presence) for subscriptions and auto top-ups.
**Key Benefit:** No "Reference Transactions" permission required from PayPal!
---
## 1. PayPal Developer Dashboard Configuration
### A. Sandbox Setup (for testing)
1. **Go to:** https://developer.paypal.com/dashboard/
2. **Navigate to:** Apps & Credentials → **Sandbox**
3. **Create or select your app**
4. **Verify these features are enabled:**
- ✅ Accept payments
- ✅ Vault (Payment Method Tokens)
- ✅ Orders v2
- ✅ Payment Method Tokens v3
5. **Copy your credentials:**
- Client ID
- Secret
### B. Create Sandbox Test Accounts
1. **Navigate to:** Sandbox → Accounts
2. **Create two accounts:**
- **Business Account** (Merchant) - for receiving payments
- **Personal Account** (Buyer) - for testing the payment flow
3. **Note the credentials** for both accounts
### C. Production Setup (when ready to go live)
1. **Navigate to:** Apps & Credentials → **Live**
2. **Same configuration as sandbox**
3. **Important:** Your live PayPal business account must be:
- ✅ Verified
- ✅ In good standing
- ✅ Able to accept payments
---
## 2. Configure Webhooks
### A. Create Webhook
1. **In your app settings**, scroll to **Webhooks**
2. **Click:** Add Webhook
3. **Webhook URL:** `https://aisbf.cloud/api/webhooks/paypal`
- For sandbox testing with ngrok: `https://YOUR-NGROK-ID.ngrok.io/api/webhooks/paypal`
### B. Select Event Types
**Essential Events:**
-`CHECKOUT.ORDER.APPROVED`
-`CHECKOUT.ORDER.COMPLETED`
-`PAYMENT.CAPTURE.COMPLETED`
-`PAYMENT.CAPTURE.DENIED`
-`PAYMENT.CAPTURE.REFUNDED`
**Vault Token Events:**
-`VAULT.PAYMENT-TOKEN.CREATED`
-`VAULT.PAYMENT-TOKEN.DELETED`
**Dispute Management:**
-`CUSTOMER.DISPUTE.CREATED`
-`CUSTOMER.DISPUTE.RESOLVED`
-`CUSTOMER.DISPUTE.UPDATED`
**Legacy (backward compatibility):**
-`PAYMENT.SALE.COMPLETED`
-`PAYMENT.SALE.DENIED`
4. **Click:** Save
5. **Copy the Webhook ID** - you'll need this for your configuration
---
## 3. Application Configuration
### A. Update Admin Settings
In your database `admin_settings` table, update the `payment_gateways` setting:
```json
{
"paypal": {
"enabled": true,
"client_id": "YOUR_SANDBOX_CLIENT_ID",
"client_secret": "YOUR_SANDBOX_SECRET",
"webhook_secret": "YOUR_WEBHOOK_ID",
"sandbox": true
}
}
```
**For Production:**
```json
{
"paypal": {
"enabled": true,
"client_id": "YOUR_LIVE_CLIENT_ID",
"client_secret": "YOUR_LIVE_SECRET",
"webhook_secret": "YOUR_LIVE_WEBHOOK_ID",
"sandbox": false
}
}
```
### B. Database Migration
The payment_methods table has been updated with new columns:
- `gateway` - Identifies the payment gateway version (e.g., 'paypal_v3')
- `last4` - Last 4 digits for cards
- `brand` - Card brand (Visa, Mastercard, etc.)
- `paypal_email` - PayPal account email
- `status` - Payment method status
**Migration runs automatically** when the application starts.
---
## 4. Testing the Integration
### A. Test Adding PayPal Payment Method
1. **Start your application**
2. **Login to your dashboard**
3. **Navigate to:** `/dashboard/billing`
4. **Click:** Add PayPal
5. **You'll be redirected to PayPal sandbox login**
6. **Login with your sandbox buyer account**
7. **Approve the payment method**
8. **You'll be redirected back** with success message
### B. Verify in Database
```sql
SELECT * FROM payment_methods WHERE type = 'paypal' AND gateway = 'paypal_v3';
```
You should see:
- `identifier` = PayPal payment token ID
- `gateway` = 'paypal_v3'
- `paypal_email` = buyer's email
- `status` = 'active'
### C. Test Subscription Renewal
1. **Create a subscription** using the PayPal payment method
2. **Manually trigger renewal** or wait for scheduled renewal
3. **Check logs** for successful charge:
```
PayPal payment token charged successfully: order_id=...
```
### D. Test Webhooks
1. **Go to:** PayPal Developer Dashboard → Webhooks
2. **Select your webhook**
3. **Click:** Webhook Simulator
4. **Select event:** `PAYMENT.CAPTURE.COMPLETED`
5. **Click:** Send Test
6. **Check your application logs:**
```
Received PayPal webhook: PAYMENT.CAPTURE.COMPLETED
PayPal payment capture completed: capture_id=...
```
---
## 5. API Flow Overview
### User Adds Payment Method
```
1. User clicks "Add PayPal"
2. Backend: POST /v3/vault/setup-tokens
→ Returns: setup_token_id + approval_url
3. User redirected to PayPal
4. User approves
5. PayPal redirects back with token
6. Backend: POST /v3/vault/payment-tokens
→ Returns: payment_token_id (permanent)
7. Store payment_token_id in database
```
### Subscription Renewal (Off-Session)
```
1. Renewal processor runs
2. Fetch payment_method with gateway='paypal_v3'
3. Backend: POST /v2/checkout/orders
{
payment_source: {
token: { id: payment_token_id }
},
payment_instruction: {
usage: 'MERCHANT',
customer_present: false
}
}
4. PayPal charges the saved payment method
5. Webhook: PAYMENT.CAPTURE.COMPLETED
6. Update subscription period
```
---
## 6. Troubleshooting
### Issue: "PayPal is not enabled"
**Solution:** Check `admin_settings` table, ensure `paypal.enabled = true`
### Issue: "Failed to initialize PayPal connection"
**Solution:**
- Verify client_id and client_secret are correct
- Check if using sandbox credentials with sandbox=true
- Check application logs for detailed error
### Issue: "Invalid PayPal response"
**Solution:**
- Check callback URL is accessible from internet
- Verify return_url in setup token matches your domain
- Check for any proxy/firewall blocking PayPal redirects
### Issue: Webhook not receiving events
**Solution:**
- Verify webhook URL is publicly accessible
- Check webhook is enabled in PayPal dashboard
- Use webhook simulator to test
- Check application logs for incoming requests
### Issue: "Payment token charge failed"
**Solution:**
- Verify payment token is still valid (not deleted by user)
- Check buyer's PayPal account has sufficient funds
- Review PayPal error response in logs
- Check if buyer's account is in good standing
---
## 7. Security Considerations
### A. Webhook Signature Verification
**Current Status:** Placeholder implementation (accepts all webhooks)
**Production TODO:** Implement proper signature verification
- See: `docs/paypal-webhook-security.md`
- Verify `PAYPAL-TRANSMISSION-SIG` header
- Call PayPal's verify-webhook-signature endpoint
### B. HTTPS Required
- ✅ Webhook URL must use HTTPS in production
- ✅ Callback URLs must use HTTPS
- ✅ Never expose client_secret in frontend code
### C. PCI Compliance
- ✅ Vault v3 handles card data - you never touch it
- ✅ Payment tokens are safe to store
- ✅ No card numbers stored in your database
---
## 8. Going Live Checklist
Before switching to production:
- [ ] Test complete flow in sandbox (add payment method, charge, webhook)
- [ ] Implement webhook signature verification
- [ ] Update configuration to use live credentials
- [ ] Set `sandbox: false` in admin_settings
- [ ] Update webhook URL to production domain
- [ ] Test with small real transaction
- [ ] Monitor logs for any errors
- [ ] Set up alerting for failed payments
- [ ] Document rollback procedure
---
## 9. Monitoring & Maintenance
### Key Metrics to Track
- Payment method addition success rate
- Subscription renewal success rate
- Webhook delivery success rate
- Payment failure reasons
- Dispute rate
### Log Monitoring
Watch for these log messages:
- `Failed to create PayPal vault setup`
- `Failed to charge payment token`
- `PayPal webhook signature verification failed`
- `PayPal payment capture denied`
### Regular Maintenance
- Review failed payment retry queue
- Monitor dispute notifications
- Check for expired/deleted payment tokens
- Update PayPal SDK/API versions as needed
